Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Professional Bio:

Immediately prior to joining the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs in February 2011, Dr.  Gonzales was the founding Dean of the College of Behavioral & Community Sciences (BCS) and Executive Director of the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) at the University of South Florida. He brings over nineteen years of expertise in the strategy, execution and program/policy development of academic and research endeavors, collaboration with universities and other entities, and a leadership record of transformation in scientific portfolio management and higher education fulfilled by prioritizing cross-sectoral partnerships. His deep and broad experiences were cultivated in different settings – academia (Georgetown, USF), the federal government (National Institutes of Health), and the private for-profit sector (Abt Associates).

Dr. Gonzales has a profound commitment to enhancing higher education's capacity by not only strategically investing in talent and recruiting diverse new faculty, but by mentoring them as well.  Finally, as the son of poor immigrants and the first in his family to attend college, Dr. Gonzales always wants to give back and so has been active in philanthropic endeavors, including capital campaigns, as a Director on several Boards.  For example, he was a member of the Rotary Club and was on the Board of Trustees for the Tampa Museum of Art.
